Mice look for warm shelter when the weather turns cold, so late fall and winter are when many homes find them. Rodent proofing in Markham means finding the gaps they use and closing them for good. Send a short request and we pass it to a vetted local pest control pro who can find the entry points and seal them.
How small a gap is too small?
Smaller than you'd think. Health Canada says mice can squeeze through cracks as small as a dime, and rats through a hole the size of a quarter. Even a worn threshold under a door can let mice in. Source: Health Canada, rats and mice
Where to look and what to use
- Gaps around pipes and wires: stuff steel wool in first, then caulk or plaster over it.
- Under doors: metal weather stripping, and weather stripping around windows.
- Dryer vents, attic vents and soffits: cover with fine metal mesh.
- Cracks in the foundation: patch them.
Make your home less inviting
- Store dry food and pet food in metal or glass containers.
- Keep garbage in bins with tight lids and clear clutter where mice can nest.
- Raise woodpiles about 30 cm off the ground and keep them away from the house.
- Fix leaky taps and sweating pipes.
Health Canada also says poison baits should not be the only method. Proofing and keeping things clean have to go with them. If you see droppings or hear scratching already, see our mice and rats page.
Renting?
In Ontario the landlord is usually responsible for keeping the unit free of pests. Check the Landlord and Tenant Board's guide before you pay for the work yourself. Source: Landlord and Tenant Board
